Friendly reminder that GIMP does pretty much everything Photoshop does, and it’s 100% free. Fuck DRM and the license culture, we have plenty of open source options available to us as a consumer.

  • Lightworks is a freeware video editor on par with Premiere
  • Blender is an excellent freeware 3D renderer, possibly better than After Effects
  • Lightzone to replace Lightroom
  • Inkscape to replace Illustratr
  • Audacity to replace Audition (I also received a free version of Pro Tools with my Scarlett Solo audio interface)

If Adobe is going to be greedy shitheads, then fuck ‘em. Don’t use their stuff. Freeware can be just as good, if not better, than Adobe CC.

reblog to save a digital arts major

Reblog to save an artist.

oh jEEZ

I will keep saying this: GIMP sucks butts.

- Medibang Paint and Fire Alpaca for more cartoon style illustration

- Krita for painting

- Clip Studio Paint (not free, but often on sale and cheap even at full price) is better than PS for art and I’m about to cut adobe entirely. Even does some photo editing.

- Paint Tool SAI (again, not free but cheap) old but good, there’s a ton of hacked copies around too. Not hard to get for free.

- Open Tunez for animation.

image

I’m currently using Affinity Photo and it’s a great Photoshop alternative. One time fee only and it’s not really expensive, plus supports PSD formats. Free trial available too!

Davinci Resolve for video editing is amazing as well! :)

Another great art program to include in the list is the completely free, no download, browser recreation of photoshop, Photopea! It has the potential/customizability to be as robust as a full copy of photoshop while also being perfectly accessible to anyone looking to just do some quick edits with no strings attached.

Also, heads up to anyone using it,

As of July 5th 2021, Audacity is now considered a potential spyware security risk,

so please approach it with caution and do some research on the situation as things progress.

Tumblr,

As you’re probably aware, the coronavirus disease, or COVID-19, has now been found in countries all over the globe. This is an understandably disconcerting moment for many, but there are steps we can all take to help mitigate the effect on our communities.

COVID-19 is spreading, but misinformation and disinformation are spreading even faster. The most responsible thing you can do is protect yourself from both the disease and false information. Being prepared with facts and data instead of assumptions and fabrications will help inform how you can best prepare for COVID-19.

Here are some resources you can trust:

  • WHO provides daily updates surrounding COVID-19’s spread, infection rate, and general influence on our society. Their latest update given on March 3, 2020, details that there is a shortage of personal protective equipment for healthcare professionals. They also provide a very handy FAQ section, where you can learn more about how to protect yourself and your community.
  • Every day Worldometer updates its website with the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in each country that has been affected. Worldometer has been rated one of the best free reference websites by the American Library Association, and for good reason: it lists every single one of its regular sources here, and lists the source of every COVID-19 update at the bottom of the COVID-19 page.
  • Your local health department will often have the most up-to-date information specific to your immediate area, including how to proceed if you believe you may be showing symptoms of the virus. If you live in the United States, you can find the contact information for your health department by visiting the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO).

There’s another thing about this news that a lot of places are not talking about: the toll on one’s mental health, especially if you are someone who struggles with anxiety. If you find your concerns about being prepared are crossing a line that affects your mental health, please consider reaching out to a loved one who can guide you to help, a mental health professional, or an organization set up to help those in need.

Here are a couple of organizations you can trust:

  • Crisis Text Line is free, 24/7 support. Just text 741741 from anywhere in the United States. The Crisis Text Line will connect you with a trained Crisis Counselor.
  • National Alliance on Mental Health (@namiorg) offers free support and resources for those who are struggling. NAMI can be reached Monday through Friday, 10 am - 6 pm EST at 1-800-950-NAMI (6264) or by email at info@nami.org.

Take care of yourselves, Tumblr. Wash your hands well, practice keeping a safe distance from others, only wear a mask if you believe you are sick with COVID-19 symptoms and could infect others (or are immunocompromised yourself), and remember to fact check everything that you see. Head on over to @world-wide-what for a refresher on what fake news looks like and how it spreads. Pass those tips onto others when you see them accidentally spreading false information.

My face is having uncontrollable spasms. Great. It hurts really, really, really bad.

I think part of why I have trouble explaining pain to the doctor is when they ask about the pain scale I always think “Well, if someone threw me down a flight of stairs right now or punched me a few times, it would definitely hurt a lot more” so I end up saying a low number. I was reading an article that said that “10” is the most commonly reported number and that is baffling to me. When I woke up from surgery with an 8" incision in my body and I could hardly even speak, I was in the most horrific pain of my life but I said “6” because I thought “Well, if you hit me in the stomach, it would be worse.”

I searched and searched for the post this graphic was from, and the OP deactivated, but I kept the graphic, because my BFF does the same thing, uses her imagination to come up with the worst pain she can imagine and pegs her “10″ there, and so is like, well, I’m conscious, so this must be a 5, and then the doctors don’t take her seriously. (And she then does things like driving herself to the hospital while in the process of giving birth. Probably should have called an ambulance for that one!)

So I found this and sent it to her. Because this is what they want to know: how badly is this pain affecting you? Not on a scale of “nothing” to “how I’d imagine it’d feel if bears were eating my still-living guts while I was on fire”.

image

I hate reposting stuff, but I’ll never find that post again and OP is deactivated, so, here’s a repost. I can delete this later, i just wanted to get it to you and I can’t embed images in a chat or an ask.

This is possibly why it took several weeks to diagnose my fractured spine.

Pain Scale transcription:

10 - I am in bed and I can’t move due to my pain. I need someone to take me to the emergency room because of my pain.

9 - My pain is all that I can think about. I can barely move or talk because of my pain.

8 - My pain is so severe that it is difficult to think of anything else. Talking and listening are difficult.

7 - I am in pain all the time. It keeps me from doing most activities.

6 - I think about my pain all of the time. I give up many activities because of my pain.

5 - I think about my pain most of the time. I cannot do some of the activities I need to do each day because of the pain.

4 - I am constantly aware of my pain but can continue most activities.

3 - My pain bothers me but I can ignore it most of the time.

2 - I have a low level of pain. I am aware of my pain only when I pay attention to it.

1 - My pain is hardly noticeable.

0 - I have no pain.

It’s also really important to get this kind of scale to people who have chronic pain, because chronic pain drastically lowers your perception of how “bad” any kind of pain actually is, and yet something like this pain scale is extremely user friendly.

For example, if someone asked me how much pain I’m in at any given time, I’d say hardly any, and yet I’m apparently at a chronic 2.5, and it only goes up from there depending on the day.

There’s also a similarly useful “Fatigue Scale”

I haven’t been below a 5 on this scale for 4 years

Here’s the fatigue scale

image

Fatigue scale image desc:

10: can barely move; can’t talk

9: can barely move; can talk

8: can move, but can’t do much more than watch TV

7: can watch TV and play a game on my phone simultaneously

6: can do work on my computer lying in bed

5: can get around the house, but definitely couldn’t go out

4: can run a light errand

3: can get in my 10,000 steps, making my fitbit happy

2: can do three or more activities in a single day

1: going clubbing!

Mental Health Pain Scale transcription:

MILD

1 - Everything is a-okay! There is absolutely nothing wrong. You’re probably cuddling a fluffy kitten right now. Enjoy!

2 - You’re a bit frustrated or disappointed, but you’re easily distracted and cheered up with a little effort.

3 - Things are bothering you, but you’re coping. You might be overtired or hungry. The emotional equivalent of a headache.

MODERATE

4 - Today is a bad day (or a few bad days). You still have the skills to get through it, but be gentle with yourself. Use self-care strategies.

5 - Your mental health is starting to impact on your everyday life. Easy things are becoming difficult. You should talk to your doctor.

6 - You can’t do things the way you usually do them due to your mental health. Impulsive and compulsive thoughts may be hard to cope with.

SEVERE

7 - You’re avoiding things that make you more distressed, but that will make it worse. You should definitely seek help. This is serious.

8 - You can’t hide your struggles any more. You may have issues sleeping, eating, having fun, socialising, and work/study. Your mental health is affecting almost all parts of your life.

9 - You’re at a critical point. You aren’t functioning any more. You need urgent help. You may be a risk to yourself or others if left untreated.

10 - The worst mental and emotional distress possible. You can no longer care for yourself. You can’t imagine things getting any worse. Contact a crisis line immediately.

These are so important! SO SO IMPORTANT SHARE THIS AND SAVE IT TO SHOW YOUR DOCTORS!

what the fuck is that seriously what the fuck is making my computer be a fucking piece of shit

@baristaboy
try this out dude

@lambylin

y’all didn’t even add a tutorial of how to do this so imma put one right here

1. type in cmd.exe into your windows search and right click on Command Promt search result and select “Run as Administator”.
2. Type/Copypase in  net.exe stop “Windows Search” and make sure Windows Search is in quotations. It should then respond saying “The Windows Search service is stopping” and then tell you it’s stopped.

This is only a temp fix though, if you want it switched off permanently then do THIS:

1.  Press the Windows key + R at the same time and type in services.msc.
2.  Scroll until you find Windows Search and double click it to enter its Properties window.
3.  Change the Startup type to Disabled. Apply this change and you can exit out.

VOILA, NO MORE TAKEN UP DISK SPACE

Yo this sick nasty

children are not your free therapy

thatdiabolicalfeminist:

It’s not fair to children to expect them to emotionally support the adults in their lives, especially their parental figures. Blurring these boundaries as a non-parental authority figure or as an adult friend of a child is also extremely harmful.

If you need to explain to a child why your behaviour has been different lately (like if you’ve had a short temper or if they saw you crying), keep your explanations short, undetailed, and age-appropriate. Apologise to them if you’ve hurt them or been unkind; don’t excuse any wrong behaviour because of other things going on in your life.

Don’t depend on children as people to vent to, to validate your pain, or to take out your frustrations on. It is damaging in frequently life-altering ways to put a child in a position where they feel like they are responsible for the feelings of people with power over them.

Children who are especially perceptive or emotionally insightful still need safe emotional boundaries – if they can tell something’s wrong, you can talk to them about it briefly in an age-appropriate manner while reassuring them that everything will be okay and that you are able to get the support you need elsewhere. Just because a child offers support doesn’t mean they are actually in a good position to give it. It is very common for children to automatically offer support to the people they care about and not realise until much later how much that interaction harmed them.

Don’t lean on children just because they are invested in your well-being. They learn from every interaction, and when you teach them that adults require help from children to manage their emotions, children learn to expect people with power over them to violate boundaries in other ways. They will grow up feeling like it’s their job to take care of others, even in ways that hurt them.

It’s your job as an adult to teach the children in your life what’s appropriate to expect from a safe adult with healthy boundaries. Instead of taking advantage of their kindheartedness, help them feel secure in the knowledge that things will be ok without them needing to take care of the adults in their lives.

A hug from a child can be appropriate, a vent session or an expectation of free therapy from a child is not.

Seek out appropriate ways to get your emotional needs met. Actual therapy, clergy, adult friends, or hotlines/chatlines are all better options when you are struggling. Children need to be cared for by adults, not to care for them. They are dealing with their own emotional challenges as they grow and learn – expecting them to handle yours too will only trip them up.

By the way - this absolutely includes teenagers, who are going through some of the biggest changes of their lives and absolutely do not need to feel responsible for the problems of actual adults at the same time.

Bro, it’s like 4PM in São Paulo right now and all the smoke made it look like it’s already night…city of ashes indeed.

That’s POLLUTION for you guys. It’s what you get when people burn the Amazon rainforest to make farms.

Ok so, the cloud of smoke over the city is from the burning of Amazon rainforest in Rondonia. Sao Paulo is 3300km (2052 miles) distant from Porto Velho. Athens is closer to London than Sao Paulo is to Porto Velho. Just to give you an idea of the damage they are doing to the forest right now, with the permission from the human trash president. Just so you guys from other countries have an idea of what’s happening here in Brazil.

image
image

If you can reblog this to make people aware of the situation, I’ll be really glad.

Look they’ve been burning the forest it’s been 15 days now and people have died already in the fires. So the least I hope that the media will actually pay attention to Rondônia and the forest now that’s affect São Paulo. The media here in Brazil is trying to take the attention away from the fires saying that what covered SP today as fog because of a cold wave, but many people already said: it’s not fog, it’s smoke. And if you’re shocked about São Paulo sky, this is Rondônia where they are burning the forest:

image
image
image
image

So yeah, they are destroying the biggest ecosystem that is the Amazon right now. And the world must know.

Because if we depend on the media, the death of the Amazon won’t be televised.
